heaven and hell

Taken in February of last year in Yellowstone National Park. The scene was even more surreal than a still photo can do justice, with steam rolling over the rise, creating backlit shifting patterns and shrouding the trees from view completely. Then for a moment, just a tiny moment, it would clear and the scene would split in half - all color and light and pristine snow on one side and twisted, tortured trees & steaming algae covered rock on the other.

  1. Wow picture is nice, however hell, to the left is not quit a good picture to repersent what hell really looks like. You should make it a scaryer picture to let people now that thats not where they “want to end up”

  2. I’ve got to say thank for putting this up. It perfectly represents the book I’m writing about why Heaven & Hell have already arrived on Earth. Just gives me more inspiration to find more key connections, thank you!

  3. Well i don’t believe in heaven and hell so i see this picture purely in a Geographical sense. It’s quite amazing that someone managed to take this picture. What i like most is that you see what looks to be two seasons collide and as a result they both look extreme. Anyway, thanks a lot :)

  4. Nice photo. This photo tells me that heaven is a wonderfull place and hell is a horrible place and its true. There’s Light and darkness, good and evil, love and hate, life and death, God and Satan, peace and kaos etc. What does light have in common with the dark. Does heaven and hell really exist? You bet.

  8. Heaven on the left looks nice.

But hell on the right is cold when it is supposed to be hot.

  9. This picture is an adequate way to describe HEAVEN AND HELL. I was almost tempted to make it my computer background. The Bible Says, THOSE WHO ACCEPT, AND TRUST IN JESUS CHRIST ARE ON THEIR WAY TO LONG-LASTING ETERNITY WITH THE LORD, HOWEVER, THOSE WHO DECIDE TO STRAY AWAY, AND DISBELIEVE GOD WILL BE BANISHED INTO THE PITS OF HELL. It’s as simple as that, I’m 16 years, I chose Jesus ages ago, and I can’t be more blessed!

  10. wow that’s the most incredable pic .that softness and tenderness and purity that was bringed with rhe sun .and that darkness and fog and dark trees .wow scary.but god creature is always the best .that’s why god tryes always to give those who deosn’t beleive in him more and more signs to impose .and lead those with dark minds to light .and the light that leads to heaven is with mohamad (P.B.U.H) and follow god by beleiving in his messengers and angels and books and the last day with good and bad desteny.and may god’s mercy be upon you all .”WORK FOR LIFE ON THIS EARTH AS YOU ARE TO LIVE FOR EVER;AND WORK FOR THE LIFE AFTER IN HEAVEN AS IF YOU ARE TO DIE TOMORROW”

  11. Oh please..you biblethumpers HAVE to twist everything around to your liking. There’s nothing “spiritual” about that picture, it’s some steam, dead trees and sky. What IDIOTS!

    AGREED. Very cool photo though.

I can’t stand reading this morons’ comments. #11 is the first sane one of the bunch.

  14. Looks like the biblethumpers are going to *freeze* their tookuses off, come the afterlife. The steam side is probably actually more pleasant.

  18. FYI - This is a common sight during the winter near the hot springs in Yellowstone. I’m guessing this photo was taken at the Mammoth Hot Springs area. - the water is so hot the bacteria in it grow odd colors, thus the orange color on the ground on the left (in summer when it’s hotter the bacteria are bright blue and green). During the winter, the ground just inches away is covered in snow. And the steam off the hot springs can form giant ice coverings on the trees as it freezes.

So in response to totoro - you’re a bit naive about the world - try getting out and viewing it yourself. You’ll be amazed at what’s out there.

As for Heaven and Hell, you’re not the first to call it that… no one really believed the first white explorer to describe it, and just referred to it as “Colter’s Hell”. Try googling for that phrase to learn more.

  19. About comment #4: Things arent simply black and white like you make it seem and the opposite of love is not hate, it’s apathy.

I’m not even gonna touch the first commment. It’s just beyond normal stupidity.

  22. Having been raised in the church I can honestly appreciate the, *ahem VISUAL comparisons being made to this picture and the ideology of heaven and hell the constant battle between good and evil etcetera. What I don’t understand is the HATEFUL undertones that come through in such comments as the 1st one or even the mindless zealocy of number 9 *shudder.

@ Melissa, they shouldn’t MAKE it anything it was like that when they got there and will be like that long after they’re gone. They were just fortunate enough to be there when they were to capture this moment in photo to share it with us and that little bit you threw in at the end makes me wonder if that’s where you want to end up. Christian means to be Christ-like no hate just love, turn the other cheek show your fellow man (by example) as many times as you need to DO NOT chastise them for it even if they chastise you.

@ Someone, that is wonderful that you have accepted Christ at such a young age and I have no doubt that you are blessed. However Jesus left us all with a mission to go forth into the world and share the gospel with our fellow man (mostly by LOVING example). I know that you’re young but have you ever heard the saying “you’ll catch more bees with honey than you will with shit” its very true sitting here reading these quotes (not just yours) I’ve got to say even I’m a little turned off. Because right now you (all) don’t sound like LOVING or COMPASIONATE children of God and Brothers of man, you sound …. ANGRY, and P.S just spouting off bible verses doesn’t mean shit, any one with a bible can do that ;).

  28. For heaven’s sake, don’t take things so literally, folks. I took the photo. I liked the title. I don’t even believe in H&H, but it was a surreal moment in a fabulous place. End of story.

Also, gorgeous pic.. I love it.

  37. I enjoy how any ambiguous art can be filtered through someone’s biases. Of course the religious would see this as a vindication of their beliefs–they’re only human. As long as they don’t mind the less-religious telling them to get off the soap box, LOL.

  45. I think that people should not try to project their views onto the picture. The fact that it has contrast doesn’t make it religious. The fact that it has some unrealistic tendancies doesn’t make it fake. Just appreciate the art!
